Housing

Many Care Leavers have led a tough life since being bundled out of “Care”. They were given very minimal schooling because of the ‘bigotry of low expectations”. What schooling they did get led usually to low-paid jobs and insecure wages. Under those conditions (not to mention the abuse and neglect that were found in may Homes and foster care), it is not surprising to find many Care Leavers are in poor and insecure accommodation or worse.

There has not been a lot of attention given to the issues but here is one recent report which (despite its ill-chosen title – Forgotten Australians and the housing system) is worth a read.

Incidentally, there’s an interesting discussion of the terms “Forgotten Australians” and ” Care Leavers” on page 15.
